LPO Scenario |
|
The successful outsourcing of legal services offshore
began as early as 1995, pioneered by US law firm
Bickel & Brewer. In 2001 General Electric (GE) began
outsourcing legal services to its captive center
offshore and has been accruing huge savings since
then. These early initiatives have now grown into
an industry with more than 50 service providers
in India alone. These may be categorized as:
|
|
Law firm captives that are dedicated joint venture
offices of specific law firms; |
|
Corporate captives that are a similar arrangement
but for the in-house legal departments of companies; |
|
Niche vendors who provide solely legal services;
and |
|
Multi-service outsource organizations offering
offshore legal and other business services. |
Most international law firms
based in the US, UK or Europe is embracing the
LPO route to become more lucrative to their customer.
Many international legal firms, legal departments
of big corporate houses along with state and federal
government agencies are increasingly outsourcing
to reduce cost and increase efficiency. |
Apart from significant cost
savings, the growth of legal off shoring in India
is being driven primarily by the availability
of law graduates in a country where the legal
system is similar to the US and UK. |

| Market Pulse |
| Its no secret that over the
last 12 months a number of the top 100 firms have sent
high power delegations to India. In turn the UK Law Society
recently invited a 20-strong delegation from the All India
Bar Association (AIBA) to the UK in the hope that this
may help speed up the process of liberalizing entry into
the Indian legal market. Some UK Government sources predict
a partial opening of the Indian legal services market
within a couple of years. |

| Right now, legal outsourcing providers in India are
offering cost efficiencies to their US customer that vary
from 25% to 75% depending on the services offered and
the US market in which the customer is located. |
